The major settlement of Millington began in the
1730's. In 1732 Daniel Cooper settled in this area. The area was originally settled by
both the Cooper and Carle families who moved here from New York. the house that the Cooper
family lived in was at 1517 Valley Road but is not still here today. Jacob Carle purchased
one fourth of the Berkeley tract, 2,000 acres north of the Passaic River. It is believed
that the school in Millington was built in the early 1800's. The school originally had 8
grades and one teacher and was used until 1926 when it closed. Between 1929 and 1933 it
had 4 grades. Mr. George Osborn was the township's first Principal and was employed from
1912 until 1923. He traveled by horse and wagon. The old school is now the Long Hill
Township Town Hall. In 1881, Mr. Frederick Nishwitz started a private school called the
Millington Academy. It had two rooms, one for elementary and the other for high school
pupils. Pupils from the surrounding towns of Basking Ridge and Bernardsville also attended
the school. In the 1900's, another school was opened by Miss Aletta Runyon. In 1865 the
channel of the Passaic River was cleared. Four bridges were built during this time
crossing the Passaic River. These bridges link Long Hill Township to Somerset County. The
present Millington train station was built in 1901.
