During the 1730's Peter Rutan purchased 100 acre
lots number 28 and 29 in addition to the Elizabethan lots. This land adjourned the
Caldwell farm which is today the Cornish farm. The land owned by Peter Rutanis the most
easterly section of Long Hill Township. In the 1800's this land was owned Nicholas Van
Winkle, Joseph H. Patten and others, and later by their heirs. At the end of 1800's and
during the early part of this century this land was owned by Mr. Cammeyer. He was a
salesman and started the famous Cammeyer shoes for men. The tract of land was developed by
L. Preston Gates in the 1920's and he named it Homestead Park. This was one of the first
developed residential areas in the township.
